Romantic Memories

Valentines Day, celebrated each year on 14 February, the month of love, is recognised as a significant cultural and religious celebration of romance and romantic love around the world.

The day first became associated with romantic love in the 14th century, when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote in his poem, “Parlement of Foules” (1382), “For this was on St. Valentines, Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”, which was written to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia.

In 18th century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and trinkets or jewels as well as sending greeting cards as tokens of love.
